The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has successfully concluded a training programme in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll aimed at empowering locals with skills in value-added fish product preparation and small business management.
The programme, which took place from 21 to 26 August, is part of the government's broader strategy to develop and diversify the country's fishing industry.
The comprehensive training was attended by 12 individuals—eight women and four men—and was designed to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge.
The Ministry stated that the objective was to offer participants hands-on experience in preparing various fish products while also equipping them with the business management skills necessary for commercial success.
It also highlighted that these training initiatives are a key focus for President Mohamed Muizzu's government aimed at boosting the fishing industry, with a strong emphasis on increasing the export of value-added fish products. This approach aims to maximise profits and create more sustainable economic opportunities within local communities.
By providing training in business management alongside product development, the government seeks to ensure that participants can turn their newly acquired skills into profitable ventures. This support for micro and small enterprises is crucial for distributing the economic benefits of the fisheries sector more widely across the islands. The programme aligns with a series of similar training sessions conducted in other parts of the country, reflecting a nationwide effort to modernise and diversify the fisheries sector.
