Financing options open to upgrade Madivaru Airport and Dhaalu Airport

The government has opened financing options to upgrade Madivaru Airport in Lhaviyani Atoll and Dhaalu Airport in Dhaalu Atoll to international standards on a cross-subsidy basis.

In a directive, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced plans to upgrade Madivaru Airport and Dhaalu Airport on a cross-subsidy basis. The minimum funding requirement for the project is set at USD5 million. The president also announced raising funds for the development of airports in six regions on a cross-subsidy basis. These airports include Makunudhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Bilehfahi in Shaviyani Atoll, Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll, Magoodhoo in Faafu Atoll, Vilufushi in Thaa Atoll, and an undisclosed island located in the southern part of Raa Atoll.

Additionally, the presidential decree included the upgrading of Kadhdhoo Airport and Madivaru Airport to meet international standards, along with the second phase of the Mafaaru International Airport development. The decree also outlined the development of a residential city by dredging the Giraavaru lagoon, also to be implemented under the cross-subsidy principle.

Furthermore, the government has launched projects to develop Hanimaadhoo International Airport and Gan International Airport.
