The Maldives took part in the FAO Summit on Small-Scale Fisheries held in Rome, Italy, with Samrath Hassan of Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli, from the Kamana fishing boat, attending on behalf of the Maldives.
The summit, held from Sept. 4 to 6, brought together fishers, governments, civil society organisations and research institutions to discuss sustainable fisheries management and the future of small-scale fisheries.
During the summit, Hassan shared information and experiences on the important role of fishers in the Maldives’ fisheries sector, highlighting the contribution of small-scale fishing communities to the country’s economy and livelihoods.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources said the participation helped raise international awareness of the Maldives’ coastal and small-scale fisheries and drew greater attention to the experiences and challenges faced by fishing communities in the country.
The summit provided an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and experiences and explore cooperation at global, regional and national levels to strengthen the future of small-scale fisheries.
As a Small Island Developing State, the Maldives’ people and economy depend heavily on healthy oceans. The ministry said the country remains committed to sustainable fisheries management and to empowering its small-scale fishing communities.
The discussions at the summit also highlighted the importance the Maldives places on improving the livelihoods of small-scale fishers while ensuring that fisheries are managed sustainably for future generations.
