Over USD360,000 received as Zakat al-Fitr

Ministry of Islamic Affairs has received over USD360,000 as Zakat al-Fitr so far during this year’s Ramadan.

The Islamic ministry has been accepting Zakat al-Fitr since the first day of Ramadan. A total of 107,132 people have paid Zakat by the 26th day of Ramadan, which amounts to about USD361,400.

The Islamic ministry has facilitated several online modes of payment for Zakat, including Dhiraagu Pay, Ooredoo m-Faisaa, Bank of Maldives (BML)’s Zakat portal, Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB)’s FaisaMobile and Fahi Pay. The ministry stated Zakat will also be accepted from the Islamic Centre by those who prefer to pay Zakat physically. As such, the ministry will accept Zakat from 1000hrs to 1300hrs every day from the Islamic Centre Hall.

Zakat al-Fitr will be distributed from the 29th day of Ramadan. Zakat al-Fitr will be given to those on the list of the poor. This year's list of the poor includes 8,984 people.
