Thaa Atoll Council has granted USD6,500 to each island council of the atoll.
The grant was extended by the Thaa Atoll Council as part of efforts to assist community development and empowerment projects in the 13 inhabited islands of the atoll. The grant was extended after each island council submitted the proposals for the planned projects.
The projects lined up by island councils of Thaa Atoll include development of sustainable waste management mechanisms, harbour development, renovation and reconstruction of facilities at health centres and installation of solar powered street lights. Furthermore, the grant will also assist projects to develop beaches and children’s parks.
Speaking to PSM News, Secretary General of Thaa Atoll Council Ibrahim Naseem said the grant was extended to maximise assistance to residents of the 13 islands of the atoll. He revealed the grant was provided from the rental received for the Thaa Atoll Shop in Male’. He added island councils are required to begin the projects planned under the grant aid this year and provide details of how the grant was utilised.
