Gov’t extends financial assistance to 6 Maldivian students and a family in Ukraine

The Government of the Maldives has extended financial assistance to 6 Maldivian students and a family stranded in Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict in the country.

Ministry of Higher Education revealed 6 Maldivian students and a family of three have been provided financial assistance to cover their expenses as they seek safety from the armed conflict. The ministry revealed all 9 individuals have safely moved to Lviv after leaving the conflict-hit region of Kharkiv.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed the 6 students and the family that travelled to Lviv from Kharkiv will be leaving Ukraine to join the Maldivian consulate in Hungary. The foreign ministry said discussions have been held with the foreign ministry of Hungary regarding their entry into the country.

Furthermore, the foreign ministry revealed 11 Maldivian students in Belarus have requested to return to Male’. The ministry stated financial assistance will be provided to Maldivian students in Belarus who wish to return home. However, the ministry said university classes will go ahead in Belarus as there is no immediate danger in the country yet.

About 50 Maldivian students had been studying in Ukraine when Russia launched an attack against the country last month. All but 12 of the Maldivian students in Ukraine have now been repatriated.
