The UK has offered tourism sector-related higher education scholarships.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) titled Chevening/MATI Scholarships was signed by Secretary of Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) Ahmed Nazeer and the UK High Commissioner to the Maldives Caron Rohsler.
The Chevening Scholarships programme is the global scholarship programme offered by the UK government, by which scholarships are awarded to those individuals with strong academic backgrounds who can also demonstrate their leadership potential. The scholarships are for Maldivian students wishing to study for a one-year Master's Degree in a Travel and Tourism related programme at any accredited university in the UK.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, High Commissioner Rohsler said the UK acknowledges the importance of building human resources in the tourism sector as it is the leading sector in the country.
The partnership is set to cover two scholarships over the course of two academic years, which are 2022/23 and 2023/24. MATI intends to increase and enhance the programme depending on the success of the inaugural initiative.
