A dozen Maldivians remain in Ukraine

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated it is working on finding a safe route for the 12 Maldivians who remain in Ukraine. The foreign ministry made the statement at a press conference held to disclose details on the work to repatriate Maldivians from Ukraine.

At the press conference, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Humaid said the ministry is working with the Maldives Embassy in Germany to continually monitor the situation of the Maldivians. He said a travel advisory has been issued to stop Maldivians from travelling to Ukraine, and Maldivians in the country have been advised to register at the nearest embassy. He said the 15 Maldivian students who reached Hungary after leaving Ukraine will return to the Maldives soon and that 12 still remain in Ukraine as travelling has become too dangerous.

However, the deputy minister added the ministry is working to find a safe route for the remaining Maldivians, who are 15 hours away from the Hungary border He also said the ministry is in touch with 137 Maldivian students in Belarus and 88 in Russia and is assisting them with the issuance of ATM withdrawals.

Also at the press conference, Communications Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Miuvaan Mohamed said Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has been assured that the Ukrainian government will assist in evacuating the remaining Maldivians.

Additionally, Maldivian students who have been able to leave Ukraine have expressed their thanks to the Maldives and Hungarian government on social media. They thanked the team who had arranged their travels and accommodations in Hungary and made the necessary arrangements to return to the Maldives.
