Most efficient council award given to Nilandhoo and Bodufulhadhoo

Local Government Authority (LGA) has recognised the Nilandhoo Island Council and Bodufolhadhoo Island Council as the most efficient councils of 2019.

Nilandhoo Island Council and Bodu Folhadhoo Island Council achieved the highest points in the Local Council Performance Index 2019. In recognition, the two councils were awarded the Ranahamaanthi Award by Vice President Faisal Naseem at the ceremony held by the LGA to confer the Kangathi Awards 2022

LGA confers Kangathi Awards to local councils that achieve the highest marks in the Local Council Performance Index. The index reviews the implementation of the Decentralisation Act, the participation of local councils, and the performance of its responsibilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla said the councils were unable to fully function to their abilities when the current administration came to power, due to suspending councils and reduction of their salaries. He added the current administration has enabled the full function of the councils.

Furthermore, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LGA Afshan Latheef said the councils work closely with the people and therefore, several efforts are exerted to ensure the affairs of the councils are improved. Afshan said LGA and relevant authorities are working hard to improve the affairs of the councils.

The Decentralisation Act of Maldives was ratified in 2010 and the local councils were sworn in for the first time on February 26, 2011.
