National Heritage Committee formed with 13 members

Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage has formed a 13-member National Heritage Committee as mandated under the Maldives Heritage Act.

The National Heritage Committee was formed with technical experts and professionals of the culture and heritage sector. As such, the committee includes research analysts, architects, project engineers and policymakers.

Members appointed to the committee include:

  • Mohamed Thariq - Minister of State for Arts, Culture and Heritage
  • Zifleen Hassan - Minister of State for Gender, Family and Social Services
  • Mohamed Amir - Director General of the National Archives of the Maldives
  • Sheikh Moosa Anwar Hassan – Musaid Waiz at Ministry of Islamic Affairs
  • Hawwa Nazla – Director General of the National Centre for Culture and Heritage
  • Mohamed Zahir – Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology
  • Mohamed Najih – Research Analyst at Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage
  • Zaha Ahmed – Architect at Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage
  • Ahmed Sujith – Project Engineer at Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure
  • Abdulla Iyaz – Planning Officer at Ministry of Tourism
  • Naseema Ahmed – Former Director General of Dhivehi Language Academy
  • Mariyam Isha Azeez – Architect/Writer
  • Ali Shareef – Architect


The scope of the National Heritage Committee includes classification and valuation of cultural heritage, allocation of protected areas, overseeing the registry of items at the National Museum and providing counsel on issuing permission for the temporary release of items from the National Museum. The committee is also required to provide counsel to the minister on implementing the Heritage Act.
