State-level changes need to be made to address crime: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated major changes need to be made at the state level to address the rise in crime. He made the remarks while speaking at the graduation ceremony of the third batch of the Diploma in Correctional Management course conducted by Maldives Correctional Service (MCS).

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Imran highlighted the importance of the work of the MCS to rehabilitate repeat offenders into productive members of society. The minister noted state institutions need to make major changes to address the increasing number of criminals in the country. He said all employees of MCS, from members of the senior management to the regular officers, are crucial in solving this issue.

Also at the ceremony, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu said 360 employees have participated in 23 courses in the last three years, which have resulted in 138 graduates. The commissioner said 28% of employees are graduates, while 62% have completed certificate-level courses, and 10% have completed an ordinary level education. He said MCS aims to establish a thorough education policy and increase the number of graduates to 50-60% by 2025.

A total of 14 of the 28 officers graduated from the Diploma in Correctional Management course held in January.
