President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated the solar power systems project aims to make Olhuvelifushi, Lhaviyani Atoll, 100% reliant on solar power. He made the announcement during a meeting with the residents of Olhuvelifushi held to discuss the administration's developmental plans.
During the meeting, President Solih assured the administration will find solutions to the most pertinent issues on the island. The president said the most important ongoing project in Olhuvelifushi is the water supply and sewerage project, which will be completed soon, along with the projects to establish a new power station, football field, and outdoor gym. He noted that a project is being conducted to develop a larger harbour in Olhuvelifushi and a picnic island for the residents.
Furthermore, President Solih said Olhuvelifushi currently receives 70% of its electricity from renewable energy under the project to establish solar power systems on the island, adding that the island will become 100% reliant on solar power once the project is completed. He also said the government aims to build 10 classrooms in Olhuvelifushi and establish a laboratory in the island's health centre. He said USD 887,000 has been allocated in the state budget to conduct 10 projects in Olhuvelifushi.
During the visit, President Solih met with members of the Olhuvelifushi Island Council and the Women's Development Committee (WDC). During the meeting, members of the island council shared the most pertinent issues facing the residents, including erosion as well as the lack of housing and ATM services.
President Solih assured the council that he would discuss solving the key issues with the relevant state authorities. He then visited Olhuvelifushi School and met with the senior school management and toured the island's health centre.
President Solih has visited Naifaru, Madivaru, Hinnavaru, and Felivaru during his trip to Lhaviyani Atoll.
