Parliamentarian Aslam elected as PG Leader of MDP

The Parliamentary Group (PG) of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has elected Parliamentarian Mohamed Aslam as its new PG Leader.

The main ruling party held the election for the position of PG leader on February 18, following the expiry of the three-year term of Parliamentarian Ali Azim last month. Parliamentarian Aslam was elected as PG Leader with 40 of the 65 votes from PG members of MDP. Meanwhile, outgoing PG Leader Azim, who had also contested for another term as PG leader, received 25 votes.

MDP also held the election for its two deputy PG leaders. Parliamentarian Mohamed Rasheed won one of the positions while a re-election has been scheduled for the second post after Parliamentarians Hussain Shaheem and Ilyas Labeeb received the same amount of votes.

Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Hussain Mohamed won the position of Secretary General of the MDP PG unopposed, and Parliament Mohamed Nihad won the position of Deputy Secretary General. Parliamentarian Abdul Mughnee won the position of Chief Whip.

Additionally, MDP has scheduled to elect its chairperson on April 16, after the five-year term of the incumbent Chairperson Hassan Latheef expired on February 10. Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy have announced their candidacies for the position.

The party has also scheduled to hold the party congress on August 4.
