Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated its minibus service will begin in Male' City by September.
Speaking to PSM News, Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said discussions are being held with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to make final preparations to begin the service.
CEO Azim said MTCC will soon order and bring in the vehicles and is working with the Male' City Council and Maldives Police Service (MPS) to make the necessary changes to the streets and the traffic flow in the city. He said MTCC is working to complete all the necessary preparations and begin the service by September, adding the buses will be scheduled to arrive at the bus stops every 10 minutes.
Additionally, CEO Azim said MTCC might also be required to use diesel buses at the beginning of the service and that the bus routes will include the main roads and the route taken by the buses travelling between Male' City and Hulhumale'.
The transport ministry contracted MTCC to operate environment-friendly electric minibusses in Male' in 2019. The state-owned company has also been provided with a land plot to park the buses.
MTCC stated the buses have a capacity of 15 passengers, and that the service will add more buses and routes based on demand.
