Ministry of Tourism and Maldives Post Limited have released a new set of stamps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of tourism in the Maldives.
The stamps were launched during a special ceremony held by the tourism ministry and Maldives Post Limited. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom and some of the pioneers of the Maldivian tourism industry, including current Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mausoom said the stamp set is part of the programme planned for the year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Maldivian tourism industry. He noted several different activities and programmes are scheduled throughout the year to mark this important milestone.
The new stamp set released by Maldives Post Limited includes six different stamps, with one depicting the start of tourism in the Maldives in 1972, one depicting the introduction of water villas to the Maldives in 1986, and one depicting the establishment of the Hospitality Training Institute in 1987. The stamp set also includes stamps depicting the commencement of seaplane operations in the Maldives in 1993 and the introduction of guesthouse businesses in 2010, and a special stamp designed for the 50th anniversary of the tourism industry.
Several activities and events have been planned for the commemoration of the golden jubilee of the Maldivian tourism industry. As such, the pioneers of the tourism industry are set to take part in a talk show at the Maldives National University (MNU) on February 17.
