High Court allows electronics inside hearings

High Court of the Maldives has established a policy to allow electronic devices inside hearings.

The new policy allows the parties involved in a court case, including lawyers and witnesses, to bring in electronic devices to hearings. However, members of the public attending the hearings are not allowed to bring in electronic devices.

The High Court established the new policy to make it easier for parties involved in court cases to obtain the necessary information quickly and carry out proceedings efficiently.

Only phones, tablets, and laptops are allowed inside hearings, but parties can request permission to bring in other electronic devices under the new policy. The policy also states that the use of electronic devices has specified restrictions, and the judges have the right to penalise parties that use the devices to disrupt or record court proceedings.

Previously, the Criminal Court of the Maldives also allowed the use of electronic devices at hearings to minimise paperwork following the COVID-19 pandemic.
