Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail and Parliamentarian Imthiyaz Fahmy have announced their candidacies for the position of Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Parliamentarian Fahmy has been elected to Parliament three times and is also the Spokesperson of the main ruling party. Minister Fayyaz announced he will be contesting for the position earlier this month. Meanwhile, the Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) Hussain Amr also expressed interest in contesting for the position but later retracted his candidacy.
MDP has scheduled to elect its chairperson on April 16, after the five-year term of the incumbent Chairperson Hassan Latheef expired on February 10. The party will be accepting candidacies for the election until February 19.
Furthermore, MDP has decided to elect its Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader on February 18. The election for the position is being conducted following the expiry of the three-year term of Parliamentarian Ali Azim.
