ECM to hold three by-elections in March

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has announced it will be holding three by-elections in March.

The by-elections will be held for the seat of the President of Kurendhoo Island Council, and for seats in the Women's Development Committees (WDCs) in Nilandhoo, Faafu Atoll, and Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, according to the ECM.

The electoral body decided to hold the by-election for Kurendhoo Island Council after the resignation of President Ibrahim Shimaau. The by-elections have been scheduled for March 26 and ECM will be accepting candidacies of interested individuals until February 24.

ECM recently held a by-election for the parliamentary seat of the Komandoo constituency, in which Mohamed Rashid from the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won with 1,441 votes.

In addition, by-elections were also held for WDCs in Vilufushi, Thaa Atoll, and Gemanafushi, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
The results show a candidate from MDP won the Vilufushi by-election and an independent candidate won the Gemanafushi by-election.
