President inaugurates new ice plant built in Gaafaru

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has inaugurated a 25-tonne ice plant developed in Gaafaru, Kaafu Atoll.

The president is on a visit to Gaafaru to take part in activities to mark the 41st National Fishermen’s Day. Vice President Faisal Naseem is accompanying the president on the visit.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture commissioned the USD 225,000 project to build the ice plant, accompanied by a 50-tonne cold storage, to the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

Afterwards, the president and vice president watched a fish filleting contest. The vice president also unveiled a monument placed in the harbour area, which symbolises the friendly and hospitable nature of the fishing community.

The fisheries ministry is also holding a Fisheries Expo as part of the celebrations. While touring the exposition, the president launched five new products by MIFCO.
