President attends the Summit for Democracy

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has participated in the Summit for Democracy hosted by President of the United States Joe Biden.

During the event, President Solih spoke about the importance of democracy and the critical role it plays in helping countries coexist peacefully in the modern era. He also highlighted that peace was accomplished by sincere confidence in the unquestionable benefits that can be obtained by collaboration and cooperation among like-minded states.

Since day one, the Biden-Harris Administration has made clear that renewing democracy in the United States and around the world is essential to meeting the unprecedented challenges of modern time. The event, hosted virtually by the White House, was attended by other Chiefs of States, Heads of Governments, Heads of International and Civic Organisations, and other non-governmental participants from across the globe. The goals of the summit are to galvanise commitments and initiatives across three principle themes: strengthening democracy and defending against authoritarianism; fighting corruption; and promoting respect for human rights and to engage, listen, and speak honestly about the challenges facing democracy globally and within participating countries, including the United States.

From December 9-10, President Biden hosted the first of two Summits for Democracy, which brought together leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to set forth an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal and to tackle the greatest threats faced by democracies today through collective action.
