Higher education institutes instructed to respect Islamic principles

Ministry of Higher Education has warned action will be taken against higher education institutes that conduct activities which violate Islamic principles and teachings.

In a statement issued on December 7, the higher education ministry noted Article 110 of the Constitution of the Maldives establishes Islam as the state religion of the Maldives. The ministry also noted Islam has been the main pillar of unity in the country for centuries, adding the government is responsible to protect and preserve the religious unity in the country.

The higher education ministry further stated any higher education institute operating in the Maldives is required to oblige with the local laws and regulations, and refrain from violating Islamic principles. As such, the ministry said activities carried out by institutes must not violate fundamental Islamic principles and warned action will be taken against establishments that fail to abide by laws and regulations.

In its statement, the higher education ministry instructed all higher education institutes operating in the Maldives to respect the local laws and regulations, as well as Islamic principles which are followed in the country.
