Member of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Ali Ashraf has resigned from his position.
Ashraf has sent his letter of resignation to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and ACC has confirmed his resignation.
His resignation comes at a time when the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions is working to dismiss members of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). However, Ashraf said he resigned over personal matters and not due to the decision of the committee.
Ashraf was appointed as a member of ACC in September 2019. He previously served at various managerial level positions at Villa College, including the post of Director of Marketing. He is currently enrolled in the Masters of Business Administration programme at the University of Western England.
The committee stated that it made the decision to dismiss members from ACC after reviewing their work and finding that the efforts of the commission have not met expectations. The committee also highlighted the lack of progress in recovering funds embezzled from the state and noted that ACC has given the Parliament various deadlines to conclude the embezzlement cases but has still not shown results.
The committee is currently questioning members individually and reviewing the progress of their work at the ACC before making a decision to dismiss the members.
