Ministry of Finance has stated the allowances to be provided for former President Abdulla Yameen have been arranged through the contingency budget of the state.
All former presidents are eligible to receive a special allowance from the state budget, in accordance with the Act on Privileges and Protection to Former Presidents. However, due to being convicted of money laundering and sentenced to 5 years in prison, former President Yameen was not eligible to receive these allowances until the sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court on November 30.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to acquit former President Yameen, the finance ministry said Yameen will now begin to receive the allowances allocated for former presidents. The ministry said although the allowances for Yameen were not included in the proposed state budget for 2022, the allowances have been arranged through the contingency budget. The ministry revealed Yameen will receive over USD 250,000 from the state budget next year.
According to the Privileges and Protection to Former Presidents Act, any former president who served one term in office will receive a monthly allowance of USD 3,245, while any former president who served two terms in office will receive a monthly allowance of USD 4,867. In addition, they will also receive allowances to cover their accommodation and office expenses.
