Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed the occupancy rate of resorts averaged 61% by the end of the third quarter of this year.
A total of 156 resorts were brought into operation by the end of the third quarter of this year while the figure stood at 154 by the end of the second quarter of the year, according to the Quarterly Economic Bulletin published by MMA. In comparison, a total of 87 resorts were been brought into operation in the Maldives by the end of the third quarter of 2019.
The occupancy rate of resorts stood at 61% at the end of the third quarter while the figure stood at 47 at the end of the second quarter of this year. The report published by MMA showed that the occupancy rate of resorts averaged 10% in the third quarter of 2020.
Moreover, as per the statistics, the number of tourist beds brought into operation in the third quarter of this year has increased with resorts accounting for the largest share of the tourism beds. As such, 73% of tourist beds are from resorts and 18% are from guesthouses.
MMA noted tourist arrivals to the Maldives increased significantly in the third quarter compared to the second quarter of the year which also resulted in the increase in the number of bed nights tourists spend in the Maldives. As such, on average the bed nights have increased to 39%. However, compared to the second quarter, the duration of the holidays in the Maldives has been shortened in the third quarter.
Statistics show that tourists spent an average of 11 days in the Maldives in the second quarter, but the number stood at nine days in the third quarter.
