Criminal Court of the Maldives has issued a ruling banning former President Abdulla Yameen from leaving the country for the next 7 days.
The former president had been serving a five year prison sentence after the Criminal Court convicted him of money laundering, before the Supreme Court of the Maldives overturned the ruling and set him free on November 30. However, the Criminal Court has issued a ruling banning Yameen from leaving the country for the next 7 days, following a request by Maldives Police Service (MPS) due to ongoing investigations.
Former President Yameen is facing another trial on money laundering AND bribery charges, related to the embezzlement of state funds through the lease of Fuhgiri, Raa Atoll for resort development. He is also facing trial for laundering USD 1 million acquired from the sale of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll through MMPRC.
