Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology and Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide electric bus services in Male' City. The agreement was signed as part of the Integrated, Sustainable, Low Emissions Transport in the Maldives project.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna and Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula. Through the MoU, two electric minibusses, an associated charging station, and an integrated transport masterplan will be established for the Greater Male' Region. The buses will be brought by the end of next year.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shauna said the agreement marks a revolutionary change to the fuel-powered transport system in the Maldives. She added although the initiation may seem like a small change, it is a start to achieve the net-zero target by 2030.
Moreover, Minister Nahula said discussions have been held with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to conduct a study of vessels used in Maldivian waters. The transport ministry revealed the survey conducted will also serve as a major initiation to achieve the net-zero target of the administration.
