Addu Emergency Operations Centre (AEOC) has banned residents in Addu City from visiting households.
AEOC has also called on schools in Addu to stop organising extracurricular activities and banned residents from organising events and sports activities, as part of the recent COVID-19 restrictions in the city. The centre stated the current curfew imposed in Addu will be maintained and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is tasked with enforcing the restrictions.
Speaking at a press conference, Mayor of Addu City Ali Nizar said the restrictions are a result of the increase in COVID-19 cases in the city. However, he said a lockdown is no longer a viable solution as it has a significant negative effect on residents and their businesses.
Addu currently has the highest rate of COVID-19 infections compared to other regions and has also been under monitoring for some time. MPS has stated it will be increasing efforts to enforce the restrictions due to the spike in COVID-19 cases.
AEOC has stated there are 264 active COVID-19 cases in Addu and 20 positive cases are reported each day from the city.
