The Government of the Maldives has begun the initial steps to develop an airport in Makanudhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
The project is part of the government pledge to have airports accessible within 30 minutes of travel by speedboat from every inhabited island. Currently, Haa Dhaalu Atoll has airports operating in Hanimaadhoo and Kulhudfhuffushi.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula said the government previously planned to build a seaplane terminal in Makanudhoo but decided to develop an airport in accordance with the wishes of the residents. She said the first phase of the project is currently being conducted by the Ministry of Finance.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, during his presidential campaign in 2018, announced that he would conduct a survey in Makunudhoo to determine whether the residents want a seaplane terminal or airport.
Makunudhoo is located on the western edge of the Maldives and residents have expressed concern over the inadequate means of travel on the island. The residents from Makunudhoo have said developing an airport will ease the challenges they face while travelling.
Additionally, the government has begun fieldworks for the airport development projects in Muli in Meemu Atoll, and Faresmaathodaa in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. A survey is also being conducted before beginning an airport development project in Alifushi, Raa Atoll, and a contractor is set to complete the construction of an airport in Madivaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, within two months.
The government has also allocated a large number of funds from next year's Public Service Investment Programme (PSIP) budget for airport development projects.
