MWSC conducting water and sewerage projects in 31 islands

Male' Water and Sewerage Company Limited (MWSC) has revealed it is conducting developmental projects in over 31 islands in the past three years.

MWSC stated the water and sewerage infrastructure development projects are being conducted with the efforts of the current administration. The state utility company stated it is the first time that such a sheer number of projects have been undertaken by the company.

MWSC is currently conducting water and sewerage projects in 23 islands, water supply projects in six islands, and sewerage projects in two islands. The company stated fieldwork has begun for most of the projects while some projects are nearing completion. MWSC has completed the water supply project in Rasdhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll, and the sewerage project in Kurendhoo, Lhaviyani Atoll, and handed over the projects to the government.

The projects overall cost USD 117 million and are expected to provide clean water and sewerage connections to 3,000 households.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has pledged to establish clean water and sewerage projects in all inhabited islands within the first three years of his administration. The government faced difficulties in fulfilling the pledge following the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions.

MWSC stated the projects had been delayed due to the previous closure of borders making it difficult for the company to procure the necessary equipment and resources.
