JSC to remove requirement for chief magistrates to move to atoll capital

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to amend the magistrate structure and regulations to remove the requirement for chief magistrates in atolls to move to the capital island of their respective atoll.

JSC stated the commission believes all chief magistrates must have the opportunity to fulfill the responsibilities of their position while working at the magistrate court to which the magistrate was originally appointed. JSC said it has decided to amend the magistrate regulations to remove the requirement for chief magistrates to move to the capital island of the atoll in order to serve their position. JSC added the decision was made to provide an equal opportunity for all magistrates in an atoll to take on the responsibility of chief magistrate.

Further, JSC has also decided to appoint chief magistrates to all constituencies currently without a permanent chief magistrate.
