Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated work needs to be done to make the Maldives safer for tourists.
Speaking at the Tourism Sector Security Workshop, Minister Mausoom said the key to the success of the Maldives tourism industry is the high level of accommodation and security provided to tourists. The minister noted the increasing number of tourist visits and said the Maldives has become renowned as being a safe travel destination. He also said he is pleased to see the various challenges in the Maldives tourism industry that are being resolved with collaboration from the relevant stakeholders.
Also at the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said one of the key focuses of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is in guaranteeing the safety of tourists visiting the country. Commissioner Hameed said MPS is developing its framework to increase the level of alertness and responsiveness of the police service in regard to the tourism sector. As such, the comissioner highlighted the importance of formulating an operational manual and conducting training programmes to provide a high-level response to situations arising at tourism establishments.
He further said MPS is continually working with the relevant government institutions to formulate and implement plans and policies that include ensuring the safety of tourism establishments in any countrywide emergency situation.
MPS held the Tourism Sector Security Workshop in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and British High Commission in the Maldives.
The aim of the workshop was to upskill security personnel working in the tourism sector to identify potential security threats to the industry and explore ways to mitigate these dangers.
