MT Højgaard Private Limited has commenced the construction of the harbour in Kudarikilu, Baa Atoll. The construction of the harbour was inaugurated by the President of the Kudarikilu Island Council Abdul Hannan Abbas.
Speaking at the ceremony held to commence the construction of the harbour, Abdul Hannan said the completion of the project will end the challenges faced by travellers to the island. Hannan said the people have been deprived of the lack of a harbour and this is the biggest project in the island's history. He assured the people will give their full support and cooperation in this endeavor.
According to some residents of Kudarikilu, the harbour development project will solve many of the difficulties faced by the people of the island.
The harbour was designed with the input of the residents.
The first harbour on the island was built in 2001. The harbour was destroyed in 2004 in the tsunami disaster. Since then, sea travellers hesitate to enter and exit the island's harbour during bad weather as it is challenging and risky.
Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MT Højgaard Private Limited to complete the harbor development of Kudarikilu.
