Police officers to begin wearing bodycams in January 2022

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has revealed police officers will begin wearing body-worn cameras in January next year. He made the statement while speaking to journalists at Velana International Airport (VIA) after concluding his official trip to the northern islands with Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla.

Speaking to journalists, Commissioner Hameed said the Maldives Police Service (MPS) will achieve positive results in its work to improve and expand police services in accordance with the new Police Service Act.

The commissioner said the MPS aims to upgrade its resources and equipment as well as improve its policies and provide better services to citizens. In this regard, he said bodycams will make it easier for frontline police officers to record the criminal activity and prevent police misconduct. He also said MPS plans to assess the current management of its human resources and restructure its administration this month.

Furthermore, Minister Imran said the highest priority is to provide resources to expand police services and that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to hire more employees for MPS. The minister said establishing neighbourhood policing services to the atolls will greatly assist in reducing crime in the islands. He added that the government aims to establish police services in all inhabited islands within the next two years.
