Civil Service Commission (CSC) has said it has amended regulations for civil servants in order to prevent them from being easily dismissed.
CSC stated the previous regulation on the dismissal of civil servants had a broad interpretation of political activities. It stated the previous regulation could be used to dismiss any civil servant by claiming they had participated in political activities. However, the regulation has been amended to prevent civil servants from being easily dismissed.
Civil servants were banned from joining political activities in 2015 during the administration of President Abdulla Yameen. The previous regulation stated civil servants are not allowed to join political activities during office hours or while working during unofficial hours.
CSC stated the previous regulation interpreted civil servants using social media to express political views as joining political activities and that some employees had been dismissed due to such issues. The commission stated the changes to the regulation have narrowed the meaning of political activities to prevent civil servants from being dismissed for similar reasons.
