MPS provides services based on democratic principles: Commissioner

Commissioner of Maldives Police Service (MPS) Mohamed Hameed states the police service aims to provide services across the country, based on democratic principles. He made the statement at the ceremony to inaugurate the new police desk in Thuraakunu, Haa Alifu Atoll.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner Hameed said the current laws and regulations highly encourage police officers to provide services in a decentralised manner and maintain harmony in the community. He said the local policing mechanism of the MPS strategic plan consists of focusing on providing immediate police services in the atolls.

In this regard, the commissioner said the new police desk in Thuraakunu will allow local police officers to respond to situations on the island, instead of police officers from Hoarafushi. He added that MPS will remain vigilant and respond to any increase in crime in Thuraakunu, as well as any other island, and ensure the members of the community remain safe.

Furthermore, Commissioner Hameed called on the citizens and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to assist the police officers in Haa Alifu Atoll in maintaining peace and safety in the community.

Also at the event, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla said MPS is focused on expanding its services across the country. He also said MPS is committed to providing neighbourhood policing services, which is an important step in understanding and preventing crime from occurring in the community.
