Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam has stated the government will open applications for the housing schemes currently under development next year.
Over 6,000 housing units are currently being built as part of the government's efforts to provide social housing. The government is currently developing 5,000 housing units in Hulhumale' and 1,000 housing units in various parts of the country.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Aslam said the government will open applications for the housing units once the projects are completed. He also said the government is also allocating funds to begin new housing projects once the current ones are completed.
The minister detailed that the housing units are built under four categories with different prices, which are council housing, affordable housing, middle-income housing, and high-income housing. He said the housing units will be no smaller than 650 square feet and that most will be 900 square feet with three rooms or 650 to 700 square feet with two rooms.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih recently announced the government's plan to initiate a nationwide mega housing project worth USD 78 million. He said the purpose of the project is to alleviate the housing situation across the country within the next two years.
