President joins roundtable discussion on understanding island climate

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has participated in the Roundtable Discussion on Island Climate Priorities.

The roundtable discussion was held on the margins of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland. Deliberations at the roundtable discussion focused on delivering key messages such as the alignment to 1.5 Degree Celsius target, climate financing, loss, and damage as well as the urgency of support needed for adaptation.

Participants at the event expressed renewed hope, as voices of small distant islands are no longer lone voices of some small distant islands. The discussions also focused on the expected deliverables of COP26.

President Solih was accompanied at the Roundtable Discussion on Understanding Island Climate by the Special Envoy for Climate Change Sabra Ibrahim Noordeen.

The Maldives plays a key role in the international arena advocating for action on climate change and most notably advocated for fiscal support of resilience building and climate adaptation for lesser-developed nations. The Maldives also encourages small island nations to present unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the international arena.

The country has participated in intergovernmental organisations to national-level activities to spearhead efforts to address and bring global attention to the climate emergency.
