Installation of solar panels begins in Gan

Fenaka Corporation Limited has commenced establishing a solar panel system in Gan, Laamu atoll as part of the government pledge to reduce its dependence on fuel and achieve the goal of renewable energy.

Fenaka revealed efforts to establish solar panel systems in five mosques and the social centre in Gan are underway as part of the project. As such, a total of 60 Kilowatts solar panels will be installed which will significantly reduce the cost allocated for electricity by Gan Island Council.

Fenaka said installing solar panels and providing electricity from the panels will reduce the cost of diesel and it is estimated that 80 litres will be reduced per day once the solar panels are brought into operation. Fenaka said it will be able to save 2,400 litres of diesel per month if the project is successful. Fenaka said the project will also result in the reduction of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by five tonnes per month.

The government aims to reduce the price of electricity and reduce its dependence on fuel. In this regard, the government has contracted Fenaka to generate and provide solar-powered electricity to the residents of several islands across the Maldives.
