Parliamentarian Mohamed Nashiz has been elected as Chair of the Parliamentary Budget Committee.
Nashiz was elected to chair the committee to review the proposed state budget for 2022. All committee members voted unanimously to elect him to the position, along with Parliamentarian Mohamed Rasheed as the vice-chair.
Further, the committee members voted to acquire written documents from the Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Ali Hashim and Auditor General Hussain Niyazy regarding their opinions on the proposed state budget. The committee also decided to hold meetings with the MMA governor, auditor general, and Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer.
Furthermore, the committee has decided to request non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to submit their complaints regarding the proposed state budget within five days. The budget committee is scheduled to hold its next meeting on November 8.
The government has submitted a USD 2.4 billion state budget to the Parliament of the Maldives that includes projects and programmes to fulfil over 90% of government pledges. The parliament will begin debates for the proposed state budget on December 8 and the budget committee is scheduled to present its report on December 18.
The parliament has scheduled to begin the debates on the committee report on December 22 and pass the proposed state budget before the end of December.
