Waste-to-energy facility to be established in Addu

Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology Aminath Shauna has stated efforts are underway to bring machinery to Addu City for the establishment of the first waste-to-energy facility in the Maldives.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister Shauna said the waste-to-energy facility is being established in Addu as part of the government's commitment to sustainable waste management. She said the machinery needed for the project has been cleared for use and that Addu will soon be generating energy from waste materials once the machinery is installed.

The government contracted South Korean joint venture company Lotus Kunwar to establish the waste-to-energy facility in Addu. The project is being funded with USD 16 million from the Maldives Green Fund.

The incinerators needed to burn waste for energy generation were designed and made abroad. The environment ministry stated the waste-to-energy facility will generate 1.5 MW of electricity per hour in Addu. The ministry also stated the facility will be connected to the power grid of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).

Furthermore, the government stated it decided to establish the first waste-to-energy facility in the Maldives to pave the way for solving the waste management issues in the islands.
