President hopeful of achieving results at COP26

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed hope the Maldives will be able to achieve its objectives at the upcoming 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland.

In an interview given to PSM News, President Solih stated small island nations like the Maldives have always strongly advocated for meaningful action against the impact of climate change. The president said he was hopeful of reaching important milestones at the upcoming COP26 through effective dialogue. As such, he expressed hope of reaching a global agreement for commitment towards action against climate change.

COP26 is the annual meeting of the 197 countries that have agreed to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The purpose of the meeting is to assess how well nations are dealing with climate change. Additionally, the overall goal of COP26 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to keep the global temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius due to climate change.

During this summit, the Maldives will advocate for two key points, which are for the increase in support from large countries and for developed countries to increase their efforts to prevent exceeding 1.5 degrees of warming.
