The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has submitted human rights violation charges against former the Minister of Gender, Zenysha Shaheed Zaki.
HRCM stated charges have been pressed against some individuals in relation to a case involving the state care facility, Kudakudhinge’ Hiyaa. HRCM stated the charges have been submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for review, adding discussions are ongoing in with the PGO in relation to the documents submitted in the case. However, the commission did not provide any further details on the charges.
PSM News understands the charges have been pressed against former Gender Minister Zenysha and the former head of Family and Child Protection Department of Maldives Police Service (MPS) Mohamed Basheer. The charges were reportedly in relation to actions of the police after some children at the facility were brought under police custody to control an unrest at the facility.
The PGO has stated it is currently reviewing the charges submitted by HRCM in relation to the case. The PGO said a decision will be made on pressing the charges in court next week.
