Over USD 38 million to be included in the state budget to implement minimum wage

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed over USD 38 million is set to be included in next year’s state budget to implement minimum wage in the Maldives.

Speaking at the ceremony held to inaugurate the newly developed harbour in Himandhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll, President Solih revealed the government is working to propose a USD 2.4 billion budget for 2022, which includes USD 38.8 million for salaries of government employees. He noted this amount is being proposed for the implementation of minimum wage next year.

The president noted about 15,000 government employees will receive improved salaries following the implementation of minimum wage. He added the implementation of minimum wage will also bring benefits to tourism workers and employees of other major sectors.

Speaking further, President Solih stated several important projects will be undertaken through next year’s budget, including major infrastructure projects as well as socio-economic development projects. As such, he noted the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services would see their budget doubled next year, as part of efforts to implement important projects in the social sector.
