Parliament approves USD 5.8 million budget for audit office

Parliament of the Maldives approves USD 5.8 million as the budget for the Auditor General's Office (AGO). The budget was passed with 49 votes in favour.

Parliament also passed the proposal to conduct a performance audit on civil service offices next year, with 49 votes in favour. The approved budget for 2022 is USD 583,000 more than the current budget for AGO of USD 5.3 million. However, AGO had proposed a budget of USD 7.7 million for 2022.

The parliamentary committee that reviewed the proposed budget estimated AGO will need USD 3.9 million for recurrent and operational costs. The committee also allocated USD 1.9 million for Public Sector Investment Programmes (PSIP). A large part of the budget has been allocated for the development of the new building of AGO in Hulhumale'.

AGO had requested the Parliament to allocate USD 3.6 million for the construction of the building next year. However, the Ministry of Finance recommended USD 1.9 million to be allocated from the budget, as construction would last more than a year.
