Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has revealed its glass water bottling plant is in the testing phase. MWSC announced its plan to establish a glass water bottling plant to support the government's plan to phase out single-use plastics in the country.
Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director Hassan Shah said MWSC is fully committed to supporting the government's plan. He said the glass water bottling plant is currently being tested in Italy and the company plans to begin shipping the bottles this year. MWSC is committed to quality and that the machines in the bottling plant are being tested by producing 5,000 glass bottles of various sizes, said Shah.
The government committed to phasing out single-use plastics in the Maldives by 2023, as per the Parliament Resolution of 2019 and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's declaration at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the same year. As part of the plan, the government has banned the import of nine types of plastics in June this year.
