Male’ City Council to stop hiring expatriates

Male’ City Council has decided to stop hiring expatriates in order to provide more job opportunities for locals. The decision was made in a city council meeting held on October 13.

Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said the city council has decided to stop hiring expatriates for its jobs and to turn the city council 100% local. The mayor said a percentage will also be allocated specifically for local youth.

Male’ City Council currently has about 200 expatriate staff. Many of its municipal works, such as maintenance of roads, harbours and parks are carried out by expatriates. Their food and accommodation are arranged through the budget of the city council.

Male’ City Council stated the decision to stop hiring expatriates would help to alleviate the issue of unemployment among locals and ensure locals can live a dignified life.
