Former MTCC CEO Ziyath charged with corruption

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) forwards corruption charges against the former CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Ibrahim Ziyath to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).

The charges pressed by ACC against Ziyath are in relation to job orders placed in 2017 to recruit foreign workers to the company. In its investigation report, ACC stated MTCC had formed agreements with 15 companies to recruit foreign workers to the company in July 2017, but only two companies were provided the opportunity to bring the workers following a special job order approved by Ziyath. The investigation revealed the job order to bring foreign workers was only sent to SK Maldives Private Limited and Country Maldives Private Limited, with no other recruitment agency receiving the job order. Ziyath has been accused of using his influence to provide an illegitimate benefit to SK Maldives and Country Maldives in the recruitment of foreign workers to the company.

The report by ACC further revealed the commission had ordered MTCC in August 2017 to halt the recruitment of foreign workers under the job order. However, the report revealed MTCC had proceeded with the recruitment of 33 foreign workers under the special job order placed to SK Maldives and Country Maldives.

ACC stated its investigation has revealed the special job order approved by Ziyath was designed to provide an illegitimate benefit to SK Maldives and Country Maldives. Therefore, ACC said Ziyath is being charged with using his position and influence to provide an illegitimate benefit to a business or company.
