Relations with President not affected by political differences: Speaker

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has assured his amicable relationship with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has not been affected by their political differences. He made the statement at a press conference regarding the political differences that occurred with the president while Nasheed was abroad for medical treatment following the May 6 terrorist attack.

At the press conference, Speaker Nasheed said he expects bills to be drafted in accordance with the policies of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). He had earlier expressed concern over the government's decision to drastically change the bill on acts of hatred after it was criticised by the public and political parties.

Speaker Nasheed said he plans to discuss his various concerns with President Solih and assured that their decades-long friendship will never waver. The speaker also said the government has been handling his security exceptionally since his return to the Maldives and that he will be staying at Hotel Jen until his official residence is assigned. He added that his wish is to live in his own home but the national security services are unable to approve his request due to the current security risk.

Furthermore, Speaker Nasheed said he will soon be giving his statement to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) for the May 6 attack investigation.
