Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has revealed the Maldives is receiving more revenue than previously estimated for this year. He made the statement at the parliament, which is the first sitting he presided over since returning to the Maldives after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the May 6 terrorist attack.
At the sitting, Speaker Nasheed said the parliament should begin focusing on reviewing the state budget for 2022. He also said he is pleased to see the fast pace of economic recovery, which is the result of the policies set by the government and parliament.
Speaker Nasheed also noted state revenue has increased since the parliament approved the personal income tax. He highlighted the government's decision to open borders, despite the challenges faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and opening tourist accommodations to reinvigorate the economy.
Furthermore, Speaker Nasheed provided details on the current work at the parliament and revealed there are currently 32 left to review, out of 111 bills submitted by the government. The speaker said he expects the parliament to complete its work regarding the bills before the deadline next month. He also detailed that 36 resolutions were submitted to the parliament this year and that work on 28 resolutions was completed with eight resolutions still under review.
Speaker Nasheed also urged the members to quickly review various other cases submitted to the parliament.
