Nine journalists receive accolades at Journalism Awards 2020

Maldives Media Council (MMC) has awared nine journalists at the Maldives Journalism Awards 2020.

This year's awards were given to journalists working in broadcasting and print media. MMC received the most applications for this year's awards, and most of the accolades were given to journalists working at Sangu TV.

At the awards ceremony, MMC presented the award for best journalist in the feature reports category and political category to Maahath Hussain Rasheed, the award for best video journalist to Hawwa Minha, and the award for best sports journalist to Mohamed Hamdhoon. The council presented the award for best journalist in the legal and judicial sector to Laisa Ahmed, the best journalist award in the social sector to Amna Ahmed, and the best investigative journalist award to Mohamed Azheem Azeem.

Additionally, Fathimath Shaana Mohamed received the award for best journalist in the business sector and Ibrahim Shaabil received the award for the best photojournalist. MMC also presented lifetime achievement awards to Ali Hussain and Hussain Mohamed for their contributions to journalism. The awards were presented at the ceremony by Minister of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mahloof said journalists have a high degree of responsibility as they have the power to change society. Also at the ceremony, President of MMC Shahuban Fahmy said the high number of applicants for this year's awards is a result of the trust and respect citizens have for journalists.

He also said MMC will continue to improve the standard for journalism in the Maldives.
